Activity 1: What Is A Queue? Interactive or Themed ( Est time to Read & View- 30 min)

There are three types of Queues

Walk thru- No real props or items

Themed/Visual – props or items that add to the theme, but you can not interact with the props

Interactive Queues – You can interact, touch or play with the items in the Queue

Questions To Ask: What are Themed queues?

Themed queues are the lines that have lots of details worth paying attention to.

We like to view [queues] as the first scene in the story, whatever the story of that particular attraction is," said Joe Garlington, creative vice President of Interactives at Walt Disney Imagineering, which develops Disney parks and resorts.

The line to one popular attraction at Epcot features cameras and large interactive screens that allow visitors to see themselves and play games, such as trying to burst virtual water balloons to reveal a hidden image, Garlington said.

People waiting in line for a comedy show at Walt Disney World are asked to text message jokes that may be used during the main event.

"It works as our warm-up act essentially for the show, but it also takes time while people are working through that and so it keeps them entertained while they're waiting," Garlington said.

"We do study the psychology, try to understand what our guests are thinking and make sure that we're keeping them happy as they move through the lines."

Disney employs more than 75 industrial engineers who help the company with queue management at its parks around the world, said Marilyn Waters, director of media relations at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Interactive Queue-What are interactive queues?

If you visit Walt Disney World, waiting in line for attractions a necessary evil.  Disney's FASTPASS+ has helped and it allows guests to bypass some of the long lines. Over the past two years, Disney has been adding interactive queue elements that many guests find to be nearly as much fun as the attractions themselves!

One way that Disney makes the Interactive queue entertaining is to make it an immersive themed queue which includes interactive elements that run through the queue and the attraction. They queue has to feel like an extension of the ride.

In 2011, Walt Disney World opened a fully immersive queue at the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.  The tree that is the centerpiece of the Pooh playground ion is in front of the attraction, and young guests can enjoy the small play area inside.  The queue consists of many features, including Gophers that shoot out from their holes when you step on the corresponding animal print on the ground!

The interactive and themed queues of Disney World

Magic Kingdom - Interactive queues:

Haunted Mansion - When it comes to interactive and themed queues of Disney World, the Haunted Mansion is one of the best. You'll find a line full of great things to do and it’s worth a visit. For the best experience (and shorter lines) we suggest visiting within the first two hours after the park opens.

Dumbo - a whole indoor play area where kids can have fun while you wait and a good queue for you to spend some time. The best time to visit is within the first 3 hours that the park is open. People who use a FastPass+ here completely skip the play area so you'll want to ride in the standby line to visit the play area.

Winnie the Pooh - there are several fun, hands-on activities to do in this line. The suggested best time for visiting is within the first hour the park is open (after some first-priority attractions like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Peter Pan's Flight). People who use FastPass+ here will be able to enjoy some of the items here, but usually end up having to walk by them quickly.

Space Mountain - video games are available along the queue but they are not worth standing in a long line to do

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train - several interactive elements that are worth a few minutes of time, but I'd recommend riding it within the first hour to avoid really long waits if you don't end up using a FastPass+ reservation

Journey of the Little Mermaid - heavily themed line with a few interactive elements

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - recently updated queue that now includes some entertaining, interactive elements

Peter Pan's Flight - recently revamped, this queue is now heavily themed and makes the long wait bearable

Haunted Mansion interactive queue also opened in 2011 and is one of the best reasons to walk through the entire queue?

Hang a left as you approach the entry and you will be able to play instruments, create music, and make books slide in and out from a library wall.  There is a pipe organ that can be played by touching the keys, with the song "Grim Grinning Ghosts" emanating from it.  Tombstones that used to be in the graveyard to the left of the Haunted Mansion entrance are now scattered throughout - some are close enough to touch.  Master Gracey's tombstone is given a place of honor near the Sea Captain. Take the time to explore. And read the tombstones. It is a GREAT addition to a classic ride.

Let’s walk into the new interactive themed queue at the The Haunted Mansion attraction.

When you enter the queue you can see the new row of busts. Each bust has a plaque with the name of the departed and a short epitaph.

All of the original tombstones are there and it included the tribute to Imagineer Marc Davis. A couple of shovels have been left in the graveyard, but not sure what they are for or what they represent, if anything.

There are two sides of the musical crypt where guests can play with the various musical instruments

Guests try their hand at the ballroom organ, which has “Ravenscroft” inscribed on it, in tribute to voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft.

The Sea Captain is the central figure of the queue and he will sing, sneeze, and has bubbles rising from his crypt.

Master Gracey’s tombstone (a tribute to Imagineer Yale Gracey) is nearby and it is nice having it close so you can take photos with it.

This library has books that slide in and out of the wall and a Cast Member told us that the symbols on the books have a crypt-o-gram similar to the writing at Disneyland’s Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye attraction!

Another new crypt pays tribute to the Imagineers who had big parts in the Haunted Mansion’s creation, including: voice actor Paul Frees (the Ghost Host), Imagineer Ken Anderson, sculptor Blaine Gibson, and Imagineer Rolly Crump

Madame Leota is also there – along with a gargoyle next to her.
